Republicans in Congress are pushing legislation that would impose work requirements and annual spending caps on Medicaid enrollees. If passed, this legislation would pull federal spending out of Iowa, harming hospitals, particularly in rural areas, costing jobs, and forcing the state to make devastating cuts to health care, education, or other programs Iowans rely on.
To fight back, we’re collecting stories of:
- People who once benefited from Medicaid or SNAP and those who currently do
- Those impacted by President Trump/Elon Musk “DOGE” decisions
- Other issues important to you

By the numbers:
- As of August 2024: 678,105 Iowans are enrolled in Medicaid.
- That’s 21 percent of the population, half of all nursing home residents, 37 percent of all children, and 39 percent of all births.
- From July to September of 2024, Medicaid provided over half a million meals to Iowans.
- 21% of Iowans are covered by Medicaid/CHIP
- 75% of Iowa adults on Medicaid are working
- Cuts to Medicaid will hurt Iowans – Iowa children won’t be able to get preventative care; pregnant women won’t have access to prenatal care and seniors won’t be able to afford nursing homes and long-term care at home.
Everyone would pay the price for Medicaid Cuts. The cuts would ripple across our health care system, straining hospitals and nursing homes. Particularly hard hit would be facilities in rural Iowa where more Iowans rely on it for health insurance.

We need to tell our Members of Congress that Medicaid is not a piggy bank to break to pay for tax breaks for the wealthy!
